DAPPER DAN CLASSIC UNITED STATES TEAM MAY PIN HOPES ON THREE-TIME MICHIGAN CHAMPION |
PITTSBURGH – Nick Simmons, who owns a 206-0 record and has won three Michigan state championships for Williamston High School, has been selected to the United States team for the 27th annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic scheduled for Saturday, March 24 at the University of Pittsburgh’s Fitzgerald Field House.
Simmons, who has won by pin or technical fall in 152 consecutive bouts, including 46 pins and a technical fall this season, will wrestle at 119 pounds.
Simmons is a three-time Junior National freestyle champion and will bid to become the first wrestler to win four Junior National titles while going undefeated.
As a schoolboy, Simmons went 50-0 as a freshman, 59-0 as a sophomore and 50-0 as a junior. He currently is 47-0 this season.
His 57 pins in 1998-99 are a national record as are his 54 pins in succession in 1998-99.
Simmons is a resident of Williamston, near Lansing.
Simmons will participate in the Michigan state tournament next week at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
The Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic, partially funded by UPMC Health System, benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania.
The Wrestling Classic, dubbed "The Rose Bowl of Wrestling," is the premier high school all-star dual meet in the United States.
The preliminary match will feature WPIAL stars going against Minnesota’s best at 5:30 p.m. The main event – Pennsylvania versus the USA will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Pennsylvania leads the all-time series 15-10-1.
